MICHIGAN STATE PRISON

NOW KNOWN AS ARMORY ARTS VILLAGE

JACKSON, MICHIGAN 2010

This was Michigan's 1st state prison. It was open from 1839 until 1935, and held 5000 prisoners. As with any prison, anger and despair were abundantly felt here-and can still be. We were given a guided tour and full access to the building. We could sense sadness at every turn.

SET UP FOR ART DISPLAYS, FRONT ENTRANCE, SHADOW FIGUE BLOCKING LIGHTS, AND UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
